Joan Manuel Serrat

Singer  |  España

He was born in 1943 in Pueble Sec, a popular neighborhood of Barcelona, at the foot of the Montjuic mountain. He lived his childhood in the aftermath of the Civil War. He began his musical career with his entry in Nova Cançó, an artistic movement that promoted the vindication of the Catalan language and denounced the injustices of Franco's government. In 1965 he released his first album Una guitarra and Ara que tinc vint anys a year later. In 1968 he composed his first album in Spanish, leading him to develop a popularity beyond the Catalonia borders. Three years later, he would release his eighth and most recognized album Mediterráneo. His work was not only focused on composition, but also in rescuing and disseminating the poetic work of authors that had been excluded from official textbooks during the Franco regime through albums such as Miguel Hernández, Dedicado a Antonio Machado, poeta, and Res no és mesquí (with the work of the Catalan poet Joan Salvat-Papasseit). He has been awarded Doctor Honoris Causa in multiple occasions, and in 2014 he received the Latin Grammy of Honor.
